A medieval trip to Alicante and its Castles

Did you think everybody coming to Spain does it for the sun and the seaside? Well, think again! Today we suggest a medieval trip to Alicante and its Castles!

Alicante city boasts with a rich history. Spain has an eclectic culture if we stop to consider the fact that, during the Middle Ages, it was the meeting point of the European and the Muslim cultures with the Moorish invasion and occupation, until the Spanish Reconquista. The Medieval Castles in the Alicante region tell these stories better than words ever could.

In Alicante, the greatest castle is Santa Barbara, a fortress standing high on Mount Benacantil, which measures 166 m. It is the symbol of the city an excellent family getaway. From the battlements, you can catch glimpses of the bay beneath, shining blue and endless and beautiful.

The Castle of Alicante (Castell de Santa Barbara in Valencian) was built by the Moors in the 9th century and reconstructed, after being captured by Alfonso of Castile, by Spanish king James II of Aragon.

Legend has it, the castle was once upon inhabited by two star-crossed lovers, a Christian Princess and her lover Moor. Forbidden to meet and fulfill their love, they committed suicide and their shadows still roam the castle today. But they are nice ghosts, welcoming all visitors into their home.

Another reminder of the Moorish rule is Denia Castle, also perched on a hilltop, visible from virtually any point in town. Built by the Muslim Moors as a defense fortress between the 8th and 13th centuries, it was rebuilt by the French during their brief occupation in the 19th century. It is a must-see in Denia, so be sure not to miss it!

In the region, you will need transport. The easiest way to negotiate the traffic maze is with Alicante transfers, especially if you’ve never been to Spain before. Alternatively, you can rent a car in Alicante.
